A toyger is a short-haired cat that has an atypical and incredibly beautiful striped color, in fact, resembling a tiger. They got their name precisely thanks to such a "tiger" appearance.
History of occurrence
“Toyger” is not just a “tiger,” but a “toy tiger” (from the word “toy” - a toy). The Toyger breed is one of the youngest in the modern world, its history lasts only a couple of decades. It is believed that these cats appeared around the 80-90s of the last century.
Toiger is a breed of cats with a short hair and such a delightful color that the breeders deliberately bred.
Because many wanted, and to this day, want to have a mini-tiger at home. Judy Sagden is the very founder of an incredible breed. To date, there is not one breed that has a wild color, but endowed with a quiet disposition and the peaceful nature of a simple cat:
- Chausey and others.
But the peak of breeding domestic cats with a tiger color, of course, can safely be called the 80s. Indeed, until that time, almost no one had thought of such a miracle.
The ancestors of toygers are Bengal cats. For the first time, Toyger cats took part in exhibitions only in 2006, and recognition of the breed by such associations as the world famous WCF and TICA was achieved only in 2009. In Russia, these cats appeared only in 2008 and still remain rare and little-known here.
General characteristics of the breed
Toygers are often called a toy breed, however, their size, and indeed the whole appearance is not at all toy.
Particularly large specimens in weight reach 13-16 kilograms. The standard sizes of these cats are large, and there are medium ones. The appearance of these cats, of course, is admirable:
- A small head with wide powerful contours.
- Medium muzzle with a massive chin and a nice profile.
- Slightly concave nose bridge with a clearly marked transition from the forehead to the nose, which, in turn, is quite wide and tapers from the tip.
By standard, the toyger's ears should be set high, and themselves should not look large.
- The shape of the ears is slightly rounded. It is desirable that the coat be thicker near the ears and temples, but there should be no “tassels” at the ends of the ears.
- Not too small, but not too big eyes at toygers a little deep set, a little slanting. Eye color is always very saturated, and often amber.
- The body of toygers is medium in size, but slightly elongated. It is quite strong and muscular. The front part of the body is always more massive than the back: a strong developed neck, a powerful chest and shoulders protruding forward, like tigers.
- All four legs are strong and long, thanks to their excellent skeleton and developed muscles. To the bottom, the paws become small and neat.
- A low-set long tail gives the cat an additional resemblance to a tiger. And, of course, the main advantage of a toyger is its delightful striped color.
Dark or completely black stripes cross the light, more often a light yellow contrasting background. As a rule, on the belly the coat is a tone lighter than on the back.
Very friendly and gentle cats constantly require the attention of their owner. The main thing for these cats is to feel love for themselves. Being the center of attention is their whole life. If the owner will constantly play and occupy his pet, toygers will always have a happy look. In general, toyger cats are quite friendly and can easily get along with other animals in the house. Living in a large and friendly family, they do not show aggression and forever remain true friends for all the inhabitants of the house.
Care and nutrition rules
Toygers belong to shorthair breeds, and therefore they almost do not require special grooming.
Their wool does not spread around the house, does not stick to clothes and furniture, and does not remain on hand. An exception occurs during molting, but it does not last so long, so it is quite possible to tolerate. Representatives of the Toyger breed are famous for their cleanliness. They easily get used to the tray. A cat can be washed no more than 5-6 times a year. Toyger wool is washed easily and dries quickly. It is also worth buying a game complex, or at least a scratching post. Then Toyger will not be interested in furniture in the house, as an object of sharpening claws. It is better to trim the claws themselves with a special clipper so that the toyger does not carry any danger when playing with a person.
As for food, toygers are completely unpretentious. But, in case of feeding the cat with dry food, it is better to combine it with wet. In this case, you need to choose the highest quality varieties. Toygers also like natural food. They will gladly absorb porridge, meat and vegetables. Such a food system delivers much more trouble to the owner of a toyger, since he must necessarily calculate the amount of vitamins and minerals in the pet’s food. But in the end, such cats are distinguished by a large body and excellent health.
It must be remembered that because of its omnivorous toyger can steal food from the owners, and it can be a completely inappropriate treat for the pet. Therefore, it is important to ensure that in the open access for the cat there are no products left that could interest her.
Genetic and hereditary diseases in toygers have not yet been identified. This may be due to the fact that the breed was bred not so long ago.
Of course, the occurrence of common feline diseases and infections is quite possible, but regular visits to the veterinarian will help reduce the risk of their occurrence.
As hereditary from bengals, toygers can develop diseases that are difficult to treat:
- Hypotrophy of the heart.
If you are interested in toyger kittens, to buy representatives of this breed, to your happiness, will not be difficult, although the breed is rare. The main thing is to have enough money to purchase such a wonderful pet. Unfortunately, many wilted and abandoned the dream, having learned how much a toyger kitten costs.
In foreign countries, the price of a toyger varies between 1.5-5 thousand dollars. If you want to buy a toyger in Moscow or St. Petersburg, the animal will cost you a little cheaper: 50-200 thousand rubles. The difference in price in favor of the Russian one is explained by the fact that nurseries abroad should transfer a large part of the money from the sale of pedigree individuals to the support fund for wild tigers living freely in nature - this was the condition of Judy Sagden, creator of the Toyger breed.
If you have already prepared the amount necessary for the purchase of a pet, the following question arises: where are the toyger cats sold? Naturally, it is cheaper and easier to buy a toyger kitten at home, because buying and shipping it from another country will cost more and add unnecessary hassle with paperwork.
In Russia, namely in Moscow, the official toyger nursery "NobleUnion" operates, working according to a program developed by Judy Sagden herself.
Do not worry if you live far from the capital, it is quite possible to find a toyger cat cattery in your city, or a city located nearby. For example, you can buy a toyger at a more or less reasonable price, far from the capital - the Saratov kennel "GOLDENSPARK", where professional breeders are engaged in their breeding.
In Ukraine, you can find cattery only Bengal cats - relatives of togers. One such is located in Kiev.
In Belarus, you can also visit only the Bengalis nursery located in Minsk.
Before buying an animal, make sure that the nursery of your choice is officially registered with TICA - the only international felinological association that has recognized the breed of toyger.
Buying a Toyger: Nuances
Please note that in the nursery, where Toygers are bred, the price even for kittens of the same litter can vary. The cost consists of taking into account various factors: breeding value, compliance with the breed standard, characteristic color without defects - slight deviations from the norm lead to a decrease in prices, and this is significant. This does not prevent them from being considered thoroughbred animals, which is documented by the pedigree.
Having studied the breed standards, you can choose a kitten yourself, but, nevertheless, it is better to ask for the help of a specialist - a felinologist. It is recommended to purchase an animal only in the nursery. With this purchase option, you will not only receive various documentary guarantees, but also make sure that the cats are kept in the most suitable conditions for them, so that they are in a calm state and look their best.
In order, so to speak, to “evaluate the goods by their faces”, a toyger cat must be chosen no later than two months of age. After this, the kittens temporarily change color, their hair turns gray and fades, and only by the age of six months does everything return to normal.
It is not worth taking toygers from the nursery until they are at least 3 months old - by this age they are already given the necessary vaccinations.
Animals of this breed are mostly sold already undergoing castration or sterilization. These operations are carried out to protect the breed from uncontrolled dilution and mixing.
If you want to buy a toyger cat at a reduced price, you can book or purchase a kitten before his birth, having agreed with the breeder practicing such transactions.
Do not be afraid to buy an adult toyger cat - representatives of this breed quickly adapt to new living conditions and quite easily get used to new owners.
