Tylosin is a broad-spectrum veterinary antibiotic that is used to treat pathologies caused by gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria in cats. It is highly effective, although it is used less often for small pets than for cattle, as well as pigs.
An antibacterial agent in the form of a solution for injection is produced. An antibiotic is produced by various pharmacological companies, so in pharmacies you can find different packages. Externally, the solution is transparent, although it has a light yellow tint. It is characterized by a slightly viscous consistency.
For packaging, bottles of transparent or dark glass are used. To maintain tightness, they are sealed with rubber stoppers, which are rolled up with aluminum caps. Vials come in various volumes: 20, 50 and 100 ml. In most cases, it is wise for cats to buy small bottles.
The active component of the drug is the substance of the same name - tylosin. The antibiotic in pharmacies is found in two versions - Tilosin 50 and Tilosin 200. The only difference in the content of the active substance is 50 and 200 mg per 1 ml of solution, respectively. In both cases, the composition also includes auxiliary components:
- gasoline alcohol;
- purified water;
Note! For cats, it is recommended to use the drug with an index of "50". The concentration of the active substance in it is less, and therefore it is easier to calculate the correct dose for an animal of small size, thereby preventing overdose.
Observe special conditions when storing the drug is not required. Air temperature should be between 10 and 25˚C. After opening the bottle, the injection solution can be used only for 28 days, after which it must be disposed of.
Tylosin has pronounced antibacterial properties. The drug, designed specifically for animals, is effective against the following types of pathogenic microorganisms:
- hemophilic infections;
- corinobacteria, etc.
The principle of action of the active substance is to block the synthesis of protein bacteria. The antibiotic is rapidly absorbed and only an hour after the injection, its concentration in the tissues reaches its maximum value. The effect of the drug lasts for 20-24 hours. Tilosin is excreted from the body mainly with bile and urine. In nursing animals, the active substance is able to penetrate into milk.
According to the degree of exposure, the drug belongs to low-hazard substances. Subject to the recommended doses and dosage regimen, it is well tolerated by animals, does not cause local irritating reactions or addiction.
When buying Tilosin 50 for cats, please note that the price depends on the amount of packaging:
- 20 ml - 48-60 rubles .;
- 50 ml - 115-130 rubles .;
- 100 ml - 140-180 rubles.
The cost of Tilosin 200 is slightly higher. For a bottle with a capacity of 20 ml, you will have to give about 85-90 rubles, and a package of 50 ml - 150-160 rubles. You can buy medicine at any veterinary pharmacy or clinic. An antibiotic is also available in many online pet pharmacies.

Indications for use
According to the instructions for use, tylosin is prescribed to cats in the treatment of the following pathologies:
- other diseases of the respiratory system;
- arthrosis and arthritis;
- inflammatory processes of the genitourinary system, in particular mastitis;
- dysentery, etc.
Also, the drug is used for secondary infections that accompany viral diseases. Sometimes an antibiotic is prescribed for purulent wounds and inflammatory processes caused by harmful microorganisms.
Instructions for use
Injections of an antibacterial agent to animals are done only intramuscularly. Subcutaneous administration of the drug can cause inflammation and necrosis at the injection site. According to the instructions for use, the dosage of Tilosin 50 for cats is calculated taking into account the weight - 0.1-0.2 ml per 1 kg of weight. The exact dose should be determined by the doctor, taking into account the degree of development of the disease, the symptoms, possible complications and other factors. Tylosin 200 is rarely used for cats because of the high concentration of the active substance, but if for some reason it is used, the dosage is calculated as 0.025-0.05 ml per 1 kg of weight.
Injections of the drug should be done once a day. The duration of treatment is from 3 to 7 days, depending on the symptoms and severity of the disease. It is not recommended to skip injections, as this leads to a decrease in the effectiveness of the antibacterial agent.
Note! You need to inject the drug the entire course prescribed by the doctor. Do not stop treatment if the condition of the animal has improved. In this case, the risk of re-development of the pathology or the appearance of complications increases.
Contraindications and side effects
An antibiotic is prohibited for animals that have an individual intolerance to components, in particular tylosin. In this case, it is worth choosing another antibacterial agent for treatment.
With caution, you should take a medicine for lactating animals. The active substance is able to penetrate into milk, and with it into the body of kittens. Sometimes this leads to severe dysbiosis, which can occur with loose stools and other unpleasant symptoms. In each case, the risk for kittens and mothers is assessed individually. You can use the medicine for nursing cats only under the supervision of a doctor.
Note! Tylosin should not be combined with penicillin antibiotics and other antibacterial agents. In this case, the risk of allergic reactions increases.
With intolerance, respiratory diseases, itching, redness and other allergic reactions can occur. To prevent them, the antibiotic is combined with antiallergenic drugs (Tavegil, Suprastin, Diazolin, etc.). In rare cases, loose stools or other disorders of the gastrointestinal tract may appear. In most cases, the drug is well tolerated by cats and does not cause side effects.

- Minimum contraindications. The drug is approved for use by cats of different ages and breeds.
- Security. Subject to the recommended doses, side effects rarely occur.

Luba, mistress of a British cat:
"We were prescribed Tylosin to treat cat pneumonia. We went to the clinic every day (5 times) because I don’t know how to do intramuscular injections. Additionally, the cat was given Suprastin to prevent allergies. The treatment results were visible after two days. Side effects we have not been noticed. "
Victoria, mistress of 2 cats:
"Tilosin caused severe chronic diarrhea in two cats in our country. The drug was used to treat chlamydia. Chlamydia was cured, but we could not get rid of diarrhea for a long time. I had to completely change the diet and take feed additives with lactobacilli for a long time. The veterinarian suggested that the cause of loose stool served as a dysbacteriosis. With Baytril, this was not observed. "
Anton, a veterinarian with 15 years of experience:
"I live in the village and use Tylosin for cows, pigs, cats and dogs for more than 7 years. There have never been any side effects. But the effectiveness of the drug is at its best. The drug always helps. They consider it the best antibiotic among veterinary drugs."
Olga Andreyevna, a veterinarian with 12 years of experience:
"In our clinic, the use of Tilosin and its analogues has been practiced for a long time. This drug is considered safe because it rarely causes side effects. It is usually well tolerated by animals, without consequences, although pets are individual and react differently to the same medicine. It is highly effective, although it’s cheaper than imported antibiotics. "
